Those Pesky Bedbugs

Those Pesky Bedbugs

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans, according to an article by WebMD. These little suckers are about the size of an apple seed when they are fully grown. But, after a good feeding, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.
Female bedbugs can lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime. One good thing about these little pests is they do not transmit diseases.
These little boogers can enter your home through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches… Their flat bodies make it possible to hide in tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. So think about those thin seams in your bookshelf, bed frames, and headboards. They especially like those spots for easy access to their food, us. Over time they can spread throughout your home.
They are mainly active at night. They feed three to ten minutes until they become engorged. Their bit is mostly painless, but they do tend to become itchy. Some people may attribute the itching to other causes like mosquitoes. Some signs that may indicate you have bedbugs include:
  • Blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases
  • Dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls
  • Bedbug fecal spots, egg shells, or shed skins in areas where bedbugs hide
  • An offensive, musty odor from the bugs' scent glands

If you have found signs these pests are present, remove all bedding, check and wash then in hot water, also dry them in the highest and safe drying setting. You also may want to check inside books, telephones or radios, the edge of the carpet, and even in electrical outlets. Hiring a professional pest control is always a good idea or use products that can be used safely in all rooms. Just be sure to follow the directions correctly.
